The Wabash Valley Youth Symphony is open, by audition, to any student in 6th grade or higher with permission from their private teacher. All orchestral instrumentalists are welcome to email Carol Letcher for information or to set up an audition. Auditions are held in late summer or early fall, though we occasionally accept new members in the middle of the year if there is a need and it is early enough in the set of rehearsals.

FAQs

How do I join?

Auditions will be held on August 25 in the afternoon. The audition committee consists of the Artistic Director and a designated panel of professional musicians. Audition material will be available to download for the 2024-25 season on July 27, 2024.

How much does it cost?

For the 2024-25 season, tuition for String players is $450. Winds (flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and French Horns) will have a tuition rate of $375 and the other Brass and Percussion instruments will have a tuition of $300. No student will be turned away from our orchestra because of an inability to pay tuition. Each student may pay their tuition through donations and/or contributions from family members. We also have a healthy fund for awarding financial aid – you just have to ask!

What do I get for my tuition?

Tuition includes: over 70 hours of rehearsal time with a professional conductor and professional coaches and three concerts which are free and open to the public.  The students get the valuable experience of rehearsing and performing original, unabridged masterpieces of the standard orchestral repertoire in a full symphony orchestra.  This breaks down to a cost of about $6 an hour.

When are rehearsals?

The WVYS rehearses weekly on Tuesday evenings, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
